Mechanisms of Memory Disruption in Depression

"Depressed individuals typically show poor memory for positive events, potentiated memory for negative events, and impaired recollection. These phenomena are clinically important but poorly understood. Compelling links between stress and depression suggest promising candidate mechanisms. Stress can suppress hippocampal neurogenesis, inhibit dopamine neurons, and sensitize the amygdala. We argue that these phenomena may impair pattern separation, disrupt the encoding of positive experiences, and bias retrieval towards negative events, respectively, thus recapitulating core aspects of memory disruption in depression. Encouragingly, optogenetic reactivation of cells engaged during the encoding of positive memories rapidly reduces depressive behavior in preclinical models. Thus, many memory deficits in depression appear to be downstream consequences of chronic stress, and addressing memory disruption can have therapeutic value."

Decision-Making and Depressive Symptomat-ology

"Difficulty making decisions is a core symptom of depressive illness, but the nature of these difficulties has not been well characterized. The two studies presented herein use the same hypothetical scenarios that call for a decision. In Study 1, participants were asked to make and explain their decisions in a free-response format, as well as to describe their prior experiences with similar situations. The results suggest that those with more depressive symptoms make decisions that are less likely to further their interests. We also identified several interesting associations between features of decision-making and the presence of depressive symptoms. In Study 2, participants were guided through their decisions with simple decision tools to investigate whether the association between depressive symptoms and poor decisions is better accounted for by failure to use of good decision-making strategies, or by other factors, such as differences in priorities or goals. With this minimal intervention the quality of decisions no longer declined significantly as a function of depressive symptom severity. Moreover, few associations between depressive symptom severity and decision-related goals and priorities were evident, suggesting that the previously-exposed difficulties of depressed individuals with decision-making were largely the result of their failure to use effective decision-making techniques."

DIY Video Tutorials

Soft Sculpture Intro: https://youtu.be/olgH6G6eALI?si=gsh-DPUI74ELQoCI
This is a great tutorial on how to study forms and recreate them through soft sculpture. Material tests are key! Create a pattern at a smaller scale and perfect it until you achieve a result you’re happy with first, then scan it and size it up for a larger sculpture. Always account for seam allowance and mistakes within your pattern!

How to flock: https://youtu.be/gt0gkRpgDh8?si=E-lU3LzpPfk1mlEF

I used acrylic paint (an alternative to the adhesive) in the same color as my flocking fibers to make I (Dont) Want To Remember.

Stop Motion Animation: https://youtu.be/_ppedXZHhE0?si=1gmG8zusT39bUA0n

This is a video I watched before exploring stop motion animation that explains frames per second, camera settings, and how to prep your setup!

This video goes over charcoal animation for beginners. They give examples of good manipulatable objects to animate and how to get started.

Block Printing: https://youtu.be/4fs4XJ9heDo?si=HdNX6Jplz5rjWZoL

I have used styrofoam and cardboard for DIY printing simple images in my work and it's a fun activity I’ve done with pre-k to 6th grade students! It's a very accessible and adaptable activity to experiment with if you don't have access to other printmaking techniques.

Crochet Mesh Stitch:  https://youtu.be/-MdZpQNE7UE?si=8kpI6aHgmhI84nkN
I've used the mesh stitch exemplified in this video to crochet the background for Embracing My Child. This stitch builds up quickly and is great for making airy and loose wearable garments.

Wet-Felt A Book!

Instead of cutting individual pages from one large piece of felt as shown in link below, I used the wet-felting flap technique to create Dont Fucking Touch. To do this, I wet-felted multiple sheets of my desired size but left one vertical edge unfelted on each sheet. Once I had all of my sheets, I stacked them atop one another and wet-felted the edges together that would serve as the binded edge of the book.

Custom Graph Paper

I used graph paper to create my pattern layout for weaving text with 1”x 50” mylar and cellophane strips in I Love This Color. Each square will represent the thickness of your material.
